Changing the Health Mindset
For too long, the mindset of health has been to treat illness and disease. While that is necessary, I believe we can do better!
Why do we wait until someone is sick to worry about their health? Why is so much money spent on healthcare to treat conditions, but almost none spent to prevent these conditions? What if we took it a step further and progressed people to a lifestyle of fitness that puts a huge gap between them and preventable diseases? If you are familiar with CrossFit methodology, you will know this as the sickness-wellness-fitness continuum (see image below).
The healthcare system is broken. Most healthcare providers would love to get ahead of diseases to prevent them and keep their patients/clients as healthy as possible. Unfortunately, this is typically not covered by insurance and therefore is not a part of typical healthcare. When I worked at a traditional physical therapy clinic, the goal was to treat each patient’s pain and then as soon as they felt better, discharge them. That was it. Healthcare stopped there. Patients would return as soon as their pain returned, which it inevitably would because no one was giving long-term solutions for health, fitness, and injury/disease prevention.
I opened Outlast Health and Performance to get out of the traditional model and move to a progressive model that blends healthcare and fitness. I want to provide long-term solutions aimed at the direct cause(s) of someone’s issues to (1) prevent the recurrence of injury and (2) create a buffer between my clients and illness.
We need to shift the mindset of health from treatment, to prevention, and then to progression. There are many preventable diseases out there that we have the knowledge and power to stop. There are also many injuries out there that we can learn how to prevent. We need to foster growth and work towards goals. We need to stop trying to get rid of things and avoid things, we need to focus on how great we can become.
