Heart rate variability (HRV) is an objective measure of the function of our autonomic nervous system. A heart rate that is variable and adapts quickly to demands is believed to bestow a survival advantage. HRV is a uniquely individualized measurement but a higher HRV means there is more variability between heart beats and thus there is more balance of the autonomic nervous system.
